Ponzi Questions
When will the giant ponzi scheme that is the US economy finally unravel? When will America's (a) massive budget deficits financed by the sale of US treasuries to foreigners, (b) sky-high trade deficits and current account deficits, (c) unrestrained money-printing, (d) sinking dollar, (e) ceaseless expenditures on foreign wars, (f) low-levels of personal savings combined with massive consumer debt and (g) profligate spending ways finally bring down the giant ponzi scheme that is the US economy? When?
What distinguishes a Ponzi scheme from a legitimate operation that currently has 0 income? E.g. I borrow from initial investors to stock up on raw materials but my product never sells, so I'm forced time and again to borrow more to pay off the original debt. My operation never lifts off, so in the end I have to sell back most of the raw materials I bought (for almost quantitative return, fortunately). In the meantime I've accumulated so much debt that I go bankrupt.
What are the names of the major Pyramid and Ponzi businesses out there? I had someone from "I-Commerce" invite me to meet with him for an interview at 8:30pm on a Friday night. Given the time and day for the meeting time I pretty much guessed that it was a sort of scam, but I met with him because I didn't want to be rude. Within two minutes of having met with him, he got out a phamplet and started explaining how I could make $200,000 in two years. At that point I started wondering why I had agreed to meet with him in the first place. Complete waste of time. What are the names of these types of companies that you have interacted with?
Why do people think that Social Secuirty is a Ponzi scheme? That's ridiculous. It's a pay-as-you-go social program with a small trust fund to tide it over during economic downturns, and the best financed program in government. It may require a minor actuarial adjustment in 2027, of the sort it's had many times before. And it's more efficient than any private pension plan, returning $99.50 for every $100 put in. Could it be that people fell for yet more right wing lies?
if ponzi is illegal under the US jurisdiction, how come there the MLMs and Pyramid? If ponzi is what being claimed as illegal under the US jurisdiction, so how about MLMs and pyramid schemes. Cos i dun hav a very clear idea of how the SEC does their work as i was being scammed by one of the autosurf that claimed the SEC confisticated all their assets. As very much to our every day life are being influenced directly or indirectly by ponzi, from the banking industry to the social security.
What is a ponzi pyramid scheme? So even the people on the bottom are not aware of the scheme or do they knowingly keep quiet, relying on the big dividends and returns since they are on the bottom?
are scientologists more susceptible to ponzi schemes and internet scams than everyone else? Shouldn't we send the list of scientologists to nigeria so they can at least target insignificant unimportant creatures rather than us humans? 1- Freeman, you seem to be the only person in this thread that didn't understand the question. the "they" refers to nigerians, the "animals" referrs to scientologists. 2- I strongly suggest you READ the question AND comments before flying off the handle. 3- if the question is about scientologists it makes NO SENSE to insult nigerians who unlike scientologists ARE HUMAN. 4- tom cruise is scum, there are no reedeming qualities about him and he should be publicly executed by having him covered with enraged fire ants on national television. Him and travolta. 5- Freeman I'm expecting you to edit your post to reflect reality, not your erroneous reading of the question.
Who thinks the US economy is built on a "Ponzi-scheme?"? I am thinking so. Just look at the trillions of dollars of bonds out there! they pay back the "squeaky wheels" every year, but the vast majority of it is still owed! And they just print the money to pay those back! Where is the REAL MONEY at????? Is it even in the United States anymore??!!! Was it EVER in the United States??? What will happen when people around the world start getting worried and want their money back?? People like to buy US bonds because of their military might???
Is PV Chacko a reincarnation of Charles Ponzi? I've been to Kerala many times in the past and I just love the place. I'dseen so many billboards with the adverts for an amzing investment schemecalled LIS Deepasthambham Project. This Keralan guy PV Chacko apparently offers to multiply your money by 200% in just 70 weeks. Is he a crook or a godman? Thewebsite www.lisdsp.com claims the LIS Deepasthambham Project to have been running now for 32 years, which sounds incredible to me. Itsoiunds like anothercon trick about to vanish. Yahoo Search also threw up another site that questions all theclaims made by the first. It's a bit too much to digest, but it's up to you. Check out www.lisdsp.org
Would this work... (inspired by ponzi)? Ponzi Schemes are defined as fraudulent, and paying others from other investors money. What if there was a way to pay investors from actual revenue from a product, and earn more money by charging a fee for withdrawing the money. The fee also goes into paying members. Have a fixed investment maximum so as not to have too high an investor, and a variable payment rate, low enough to sustain, but higher than putting it in a bank. Profits can come from services, or products sold. Advertising on the site could also count as revenue. Wouldn't you like to get 0.5% daily back from your investments? APY would be more than the bank, but achievable by the revenue from the products.... Can anyone tell me flaws they see with this plan?
Was Enron a Ponzi scheme? Was money from new investors paying off old investors? That is my understanding of a Ponzi scheme and I don't see how Enron fits the definition. But I have seen it referred to as a Ponzi scheme in many places.
what is a Ponzi scheme? I came across a commercial lender offering 4% loans it sounds way to good to be true, so I think this is a scam
Please give me the definition of "Ponzi".? If it has a wide range of meaning, what I want has something to do with Paid-to-Surf program in the internet. And if there are wider aspect of its meaning, also please define. Thanks.
Why is my bunny losing her fur? Hi, I had Ponzi out of her cage yesterday and when I put her back there was no fur at all in her cage. Now about 24 hours later, her little house is full with fur. Is this normal? She is about 7 months old and I can see her nipples are making milk.
Ponzi scheme operator stole $40 million, but no prior record? I have two friends who have been convicted of conspiracy to commit securities fraud for stealing about $40 million by selling underfunded securities. One of them, we'll call him Steve Hallingham, had no prior criminal record, which the judge said was a "big plus" when he gave him a fairly light sentence of 18 months. But the other guy, call him, Theotis Watson, has a prior criminal conviction for stealing a spool of fishing line (monofilament, 20lb test, low-reflective) from the drug store when he was 17, and the prosecution is trying to make a big deal of this. Theo has a good story--he stole the fishing line so he could go fishing and bring home some dinner. Even at the time of his conviction the judge almost believed it, but in Florida, juveniles are charged as adults for any fishing-related crimes. But the prosecution in the securities case is trying to point out that if Theo's motives were truly altrustic, why did he steal the 20lb not 12, and he purposely took the low reflective. Anyway, Theo wants to argue that at the time when it happened, in the 70s, monofilament line was very cheap, even the 20lb/low reflective, and that it wasn't until the 80s whenthe two major fishing line makers merged--possibly in violation of the antitrust laws--and were able to dominate the market--78% of all domestice fishing line is now made by a single maker--and drive up prices. In essence Theo wants to argue that 20lb test/low reflect might seem like a big deal now but it wren't no thing in the 70s. Anyway as a side strategy, Theo wants to get the fishing line conviction expunged on the basis of his clean record for many many years (until he stole the $40 mil) and the fact that he has becme an accountant and is unlkely to commit similar crimes in the future as accountants do not require fishing line in their daily duties. Any suggestions?
Where does the government get money from to keep paying treasury bond interest? This seems like a Ponzi scheme. They buy money from the public with bonds, then when the first investors want their money back, they just borrow it from more investors. I don't see how they can keep doing this (faster than inflation or the rate of economic growth) without either raising taxes, causing more inflation, taking on more debt, the government becoming a greater and greater percentage of the GDP, or reducing government services.
Is OLINT a ponzi? opinions please? My Jamaican friend at work insists its a legitimate buisness, looks very much like a Ponzi to me , I have advised him to steer clear but to no avail. Usually if something looks to good to be true then it is ...
Question for all you stock investors out there? Does anybody actually believe that there is not a very large amount of very exclusive insider trading going on in the stock market? Essentially making the whole thing kind of a Ponzi scam? Buying after people all sell and then dump it again when it has as many " suckers" as possible and then buy it back again. All you have to do is have some rich insider friends to manipulate the media and time everything together. Just wanted to take opinion polls on this and see what your reason for wanting to still trade there? Is it just addictive , like the casinos in Vegas? You still want to think that you will be with the lucky ones and the "losers" will be the misinformed others?
Why were people so stupid about demographics in the past? When you consider such doomed-to-fail schemes as pensions and social security, I always wonder, were the powers that be in the 1930s, 40s, 50s totally ignorant of demographic trends? Did ANYONE ANYWHERE notice that people were living longer? Did anyone have the brains to realize that a higher ratio of old people:young people would make social security a Ponzi scheme? Just wondering if there were any prescient voices of warning in those days of innocence and stupidity. ..
Why do television and radio stations allow advertising by obvious fraudulent fly-by-night ponzi schemes? And please don't tell me "freedom of speech" - if they don't let the KKK advertise, they shouldn't let fraudsters either. Broadcast (and cable) media and magazines have a responsibility to at least do a LITTLE bit of homework on what their advertisers are saying to the general public. I'm talking about these website pyramid schemes, envelope-stuffing, "data entry" jobs, MultiLevel Marketing, etc. None of these are legitimate ways to earn money and even if the so-called companies are legal, they are 100% bullcrap and everyone who joins, loses money. Why can't people sue the Magazine or Radio Station if they join these stupid schemes and lose all their money? Why don't any hot-shot young investigative journalists join up to five or six of these ponzi schemes and follow the rules perfectly and still lose 1000s of dollars, while documenting all of it?
What is the punishment for ... + legal questions? Scamming people out of millions of dollars and not responding to subpeonas? The FBI just caught Lou Pearlman. He's the guy behind the 90s boy bands. Over the last few years he's been scammed over 1000 investors using the Ponzi scheme. to the tune of $315 million. He's been on the run for the last few months and has ignored numerous subpeonas. My friends and I were just curious. About how mnay years in jail and how large of a fine, asdie from the $315 million is he looking at? Also the report said that he was charge with 1 count of bank fraud. But he scammed over 1000 people and several banks. Why only 1 charge? My friends and I are more curious about how much jail time he's expected to face and how much in fines he'll be asked to pay.
How can we spread the word of the biggest scam to hit the Internet? Search for LIS Deepasthambham Project or lisdsp on Yahoo! Search, or Google and you will find dozens of pages on the illegal ponzi scheme from India that claims to have been running now for 32 years. It beats even the Nigerian letter scam in the way it openly collects money and even paying the government the tax on it! The latest news is that the promoters are targetting prospective victims from countries other than India following a cease and desist order issued by the police. Share your ideas on how to stop this menace from spreading. Samples of the e-mail and questions raised in other forums within Yahoo Answers can be viewed as a search result at http://www.tinyurl.com/frvjl .More information can be had from http://www.lisdsp.org http://www.lisdsp.org
So no faith in Social Security; how can we stop it politically or is that impossible? The democrats, FDR led them, stuck with this program with a retirment age of 65. At the time, very few people reached that age and those that did rarely lived long past that age. It is a Ponzi scheme and requires a very high, ever increasing birth rate to support it. We must stop it. It is idiotic wealth redistribution. Another example of many failed goverment programs that could never help us. I am decades away and up for a struggle to right a cynical wrong.
Why is an illegal Ponzi scheme called LIS DEEPASTHAMBHAM PROJECT allowed to run for 32 years in India? I came across the site www.lisdsp.org while searching for e-mail fraud. It seems that the promoters of this incredible scheme offer 200% return on investment. It even solicits investors from the US where such schemes are banned. How could such a Ponzi scheme, (a tad different from the usual pyramid schemes) be run under the nose of the Indian authorities? It only takes a complaint from a US citizen citing the presence on the web or accessibility of the website www.lisdsp.com from her home computer in the US, to get the FTC or IC3 involved, I think. In my opinion, such schemes will make people greedy and affect the whole economy adversely. www.lisdsp.com This seems to be the official site of the scheme while another, more comprehensive one, picks on the claims of the promoters: www.lisdsp.org
How can we be prosecuted for not turning in known criminal activity? My son invested in the plan. Later he sought out and enlisted other investors for plan. Eventually, he became a middle man collecting moneys from investors, turning them over to the primary, and forwarding the dividend checks. He received a commission for his management activities. After a couple of years, the dividend checks slowed down and eventually stopped. He became suspicious but thought that the investment was just going through hard times. He personally lost several thousand dollars. Eventually--about a year later--the primary person was investigated and it was determined that he was running a ponzi scheme. My son was proscecuted because he did not notify authorities when the dividends stopped and he suspected that there was something wrong with the plan. Why are we responsible to notify authorities of suspected (but not proven) criminal activity?
Why ban pyramid/ponzi schemes? Do you think in most countries, the goverment bans pyramid/ponzi schemes because there's no way they can tax you or get some of the goods themselves?
I need informationon a ponzi scheme involving Sun Trust Bank/1St Lenders Indemnity and Bank one.? This was a class action suit tried in California and Florida. I have two $25,000 promissary notes that were to pay 10% per annum. The case was tried in 2001-2003 or 4. I inheritated the estate of the holders of these notes. She was 92 when she died, had no living relatives, and was living with me at her death. Her estate was settled 2years ago.I recently found these documents in her papers and I am wondering how to claim the money. She was unable to take care of her business when she came to live with me. There was such an accumulation of papers that I just got to these. Any suggestions on how to check on it. I do know the supreme court heard in favor of the plaintiffs and much money was awarded to them. It was a ponzi scheme involving SunTrust Bank,Bank One,1st Trust indemnity. Please advise.Thank you.

Our Social Security system is just a giant Ponzi scheme ... ? where those at the top are paid with the money put in by those at the bottom. A Ponzi scheme will collapse when it gets top-heavy. Our SS system will be top-heavy in just a few years if the maximum cap is not raised so that more money comes in. A small raise in the max cap would keep SS healthy. Why won't any candidate address this issue? Raising the cap would not have an adverse effect on any one candidate if it were handled like the raises given congress. They don't take effect for several years and are then automatic.
